The Return of the American Chesnut Tree
Anna Montgomery
My wish has come true just in time for Christmas! We now have chestnut trees! However, these trees are not fully rooted, so they are not quite for sale yet. They are ‘Celestial’ chestnut trees which are a cross between the native North American and Chinese chestnut. On average the ‘Celestial’ chestnut begins bearing nuts in only three to five years and can be found to produce up to 20 pounds of nuts per tree by the time they are 8 to 10 years of age.
The native North American chestnut was the predominant tree species in the eastern forests before the early 1900s. Unfortunately the species was devastated by a fungal disease that was imported accidentally. In a mass effort to reintroduce the species, researchers have been hybridizing the chestnut, creating the wonderful, disease-resistant ‘Celestial’ chestnut cultivar.
We have a limited quantity, but would be happy to reserve a chestnut tree for you until they are ready to be transplanted! Just give us a call at 865-573-9591, and we will add you to our list!
